How Can You Divide Larger Dividends?

Long division is the method of choice when dealing with large numbers. Long division, unlike the other Big Four operations, moves from the left to the right instead of the other way around. When you divide a number, you go through a process of division, multiplication, and subtraction for each digit.

What do you divide the dividend by?

Dividends are separated into equal groups by the divisor in the process of division. The dividend and divisor in a division problem are both referred to as a dividend and a divisor, respectively.

Starting today, we’ll go over 5 ways to improve your mental math skills and become the family math whiz in no time.

Every once in a while, you’re simply plain lucky. When multiplying a number by a number that is a power of 5, you get one of those lucky little moments every time. What if you need to find 36 x 5, for example? (which, of course, fits the bill since 5 is the first power of 5). Simply recognizing that 5 / 2 equals 10 is the key. Is there a reason why this is beneficial? So that we can find 36×5 instead of 36×10 and then divide by 2 to get 36×5 instead of 36×10 In this scenario, 360 / 2 Equals 180, which is 36 x 10. Incredibly fast, I think?

There is more to do! What if we had to solve 36 x 25 instead? 25 = 5×2 is clearly a factor in this method, which is all about multiplying by multiples of five. In this scenario, how does it work? Here, the trick is to remember that 25 / 4 = 100. Powers of five can be tricky since they are always some multiple of 10 divided by an integer, and here is where the problem lies. Thus, we can deduce that 36 x 25 is equal to 36 x 100 / 4. Using the fact that 36 x 100 = 3,600, we can easily determine that 36×25 = 3,600/4=900, which is the answer.

We’re not done having fun with 5s yet. We’ve already discussed how to mentally square integers, but it turns out that rounding up a two-digit figure that ends in 5 is a whole lot simpler. Here’s the sleight of hand, folks: After multiplying by the number that’s one bigger, divide by two, and then multiply by two again, you’ll have 25 as the last digits of your answer.
