What happens to my investments if eToro fails?

It is critical to understand eToro’s structure, which is identical to that of most other brokers. It only serves as a conduit for the deposit of your ETFs, stocks, and other financial instruments.

As a result, your securities are held in a segregated account with a custodian bank. This means that if the broker went bankrupt, the creditors would be unable to seize the assets of the investors, as they belong to them.

Given this, what would happen in practice is that you would have to wait for the financial authorities to figure out what assets belong to you and authorize you to transfer those assets to another broker (which may take months or years). Clients would get their part of the segregated money investments back if eToro went bankrupt, minus any administrative fees associated with handling and distributing these monies. The amount of protection would be a formality if things always worked this way.

In trade, what are futures?

Futures are a sort of derivative contract in which the buyer and seller agree to buy or sell a specified commodity asset or security at a predetermined price at a future date. Futures contracts, or simply “futures,” are traded on futures exchanges such as the CME Group and require a futures-approved brokerage account.

A futures contract, like an options contract, involves both a buyer and a seller. When a futures contract expires, the buyer is bound to acquire and receive the underlying asset, and the seller of the futures contract is obligated to provide and deliver the underlying item, unlike options, which can become worthless upon expiration.

Do you actually own eToro stock?

No, the stock you bought on the eToro trading site is not yours directly. Instead, when you press the “buy” button, you are purchasing a contract (CFD) that reflects the asset’s price.

Is eToro paying me dividends?

We do, in fact. If you trade a dividend-paying stock, ETF, or index, your account may be credited or debited. If you have a BUY position, the dividend will be paid to your available balance.
