Where Futures End, a science fiction novel by Parker Peevyhouse, tackles all of these themes and more. Peevyhouse presents us to five different teenagers living in five various futures, spanning from one year to more than 100 years from today, in a sequence of vignettes. They live in a universe that coexists with a parallel universe that doesn’t have similar problems, and only a few people can travel between the two realms.
We meet Dylan in the first narrative, who is dealing with memories of a different time and place. Brixney, ten years in the future, is urgently attempting to remain out of a debtors’ colony. We get a glimpse into the life of a girl named Epony in the future, and how she is striving to survive in a world where social networking is at the heart of everyone’s existence. Reef transports us to a time when the lines between reality and virtual reality are entirely dissolved.
Quinn is finally introduced to us, more than 100 years in the future. Quinn assembles the puzzle and deduces the secrets of the parallel world.
Where Futures End kept me guessing despite the fact that suspending my disbelief was challenging at times. Are we bound to extinction as a species, or is there still hope for us? Take a look at it for yourself and let us know what you think.
