After US Airways Dividend Miles came to an end, the two airlines consolidated millions of frequent flyer accounts over the weekend. Many travelers had problems over the weekend logging into their American Airline Advantage accounts, viewing their miles, or making reservations. As a result, the company notified consumers that certain features of their Advantage accounts would be unavailable for parts of the weekend as a precaution.
The termination of US Airways Dividend miles kept me from attempting to log in over the weekend, so I did not. However, I did receive the following email from American Airlines on Sunday night due of the linking of my accounts at AA’s request.
It was easy to verify that the 18K miles had been credited to my Advantage account when I read the email.
As far as I can tell, there were no serious IT issues during this process. There have been a few minor glitches reported on flyertalk, but overall it appears that the AA crew breezed through this move.

Cobranded credit cards are a great method to earn American AAdvantage miles in two ways: through sign-up bonuses and through regular spending. There are now six different American credit cards available from Citi and Barclays, each with a unique welcome bonus and point earning potential.
If you’re looking to earn bonus miles on your regular credit card purchases, Citi’s American AAdvantage program offers the best value. To date, Citi offers four AAdvantage credit cards to its clients:
- Within three months of account opening, you will receive 50,000 bonus miles, which can be used for travel on any domestic or international airline. Buy an eligible American Airlines product and get two AAdvantage miles for every $1 you spend. There is an annual fee of $450.00
- Spend $2,500 on purchases during the first three months of account opening to earn 50,000 extra miles with the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. AAdvantage points can be earned twice as fast at gas stations, restaurants, and on American Airlines transactions. For the first year, there is a one-time cost of $99 (which is waived).
- After spending $4,000 on purchases during the first four months of account opening, you’ll receive 65,000 bonus miles with the CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard. For the first year, there is a $99 yearly fee that is waived.
- If you spend $500 within the first three months of account opening, you’ll get 10,000 extra miles and a $50 statement credit. At the grocery store and on flights with American Airlines, you’ll get two miles for every dollar spent. (There is no yearly cost.)
The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard, in our opinion, is the greatest option for the majority of American travelers. Even a round-trip business class ticket to some regions of South America can be purchased using the card’s generous welcome bonus, which can be redeemed for a wide range of travel options. A complimentary checked bag and a 25 percent discount on all American Airlines in-flight purchases are also included with the card.
How much is 50000 AAdvantage miles worth?
At least one round-trip American Airlines flight from New York to Los Angeles may be purchased for $645, or 50,000 American Airlines miles. 1.27 cents per mile for AA miles is slightly less than the average for a major airline.
But the value of $645 may be much less or more depending on how and when you redeem your American Airlines miles.

If you look closely, you’ll see that off-peak rates are the most affordable.
You can only get these rates on specific dates and in particular regions.
However, if you are able to change your travel dates, choosing an off-peak cost is an excellent method to maximize your welcome bonus points!
So, if you’re wondering what you could do with 60,000 American Airlines miles, here are some options!
Round-Trip Ticket to Europe in Coach

Alternatively, you may purchase the same round-trip journey for 60,000 American Airlines miles.
Etihad First Class Between Europe and the Middle East
Etihad is often regarded as the best First Class airline in the world, but booking with cash may be extremely expensive! Fortunately, American Airlines miles may be used to book Etihad tickets.
Using American Airlines’ partner reward table, you can figure out how many miles you’ll need in this situation.
One-way First Class flights between Europe and the Middle East cost 62,500 American Airlines miles.
You’ll have enough miles to book this flight after earning the welcome bonus (60,000 miles Plus at least 3,000 miles from the $3,000 spending minimum).
For example, I found a First Class trip from London to Abu Dhabi for $4,800 if paid for in cash.
Just 62,500 American Airlines miles will get you the same flight!
Multiple Flights Within the US

70,000 American Airlines miles would be needed to purchase two tickets.
At least 63,000 American Airlines miles are yours with the minimum spending requirement and the 60,000 mile welcome bonus (plus at least 3,000 miles from the $3,000 minimum spending requirement), assuming you meet it.
For two round-trip coach tickets to Colombia, you would just need 7,000 additional American Airlines miles!
To get an idea of how much it would cost to plan with cash, I looked at a sample itinerary.

Saving that much money is incredible!
Earn More American Airlines Miles
One of the fastest methods to rack up frequent flyer miles is by securing a new credit card with a generous sign-up offer. In addition, the CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard and the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World EliteTM Mastercard are two other Citi cards worth considering.
The CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard may be an option if you meet the requirements for a business credit card.
If you already have a personal American Airlines credit card, you’ll still be eligible for the corporate American Airlines credit card (or vice versa).
And if you spend $4,000 in the first four months after creating the account, you’ll get 70,000 American Airlines miles.
The Citi / AAdvantage Executive World EliteTM Mastercard could make frequent American Airlines flyers’ journeys even more comfortable, especially if they pass through airports featuring American Airlines Admirals Club lounges.
After spending $7,500 in the first three months after opening an account with the Citi AAdvantage Executive card, you’ll receive 75,000 American Airlines miles.
However, despite the fact that the $450 annual charge isn’t eliminated for the first year, you’ll be given complimentary Admirals Club membership, as well as free access for your approved users.
Within the first 90 days of creating an account, you will receive 50,000 American Airlines miles after making your first purchase and paying the annual fee.
Earn 50,000 American Airlines points after making your first purchase during the first 90 days of account opening with the Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Mastercard.
Bottom Line
If you meet the spending requirements for the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World EliteTM Mastercard, you will get 60,000 American Airlines miles as a welcome bonus. If you’re planning a domestic or international trip, you may easily accrue enough miles to cover the cost of at least $1,000 in airfare.
You may be able to get a lot more bang for your buck than $1,000 in flights in some circumstances.
With American Airlines miles, for example, you may book a First Class journey on Etihad that would have cost you $4,800 if you had to pay in cash.
Alternatively, you may purchase a one-way business class ticket to Japan for 60,000 American Airlines miles.
The cost of this trip could reach upwards of $2,000!
Value below 1.3 cents
It’s not hard to get a value of at least 1.4 cents. However, if you’re only getting about 1.3 cents per mile, it might be time to switch to cash. Saving your miles for a future trip when they will save you more money is a wise decision. An American Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Austin costs 10,000 miles each way. Nice! At 60,000 miles and $33.60 in taxes, your family of three could book a total of three round-trip flights.
Cash prices, on the other hand, are only $109 one way, which is a fantastic deal. Three round-trips cost $654. Your 60,000 miles are actually worth $620 once you subtract the $33.60 in taxes you paid on your award tickets.
Note: Low-cost carriers like Frontier fly this route for as little as $50 roundtrip from Washington to Phoenix. Take into account rival airlines’ prices while deciding whether or not to redeem points.
You’ll only get a value of 1.03 cents per mile if you book award flights for this trip. It makes sense to pay cash for these flights and preserve your miles for a later, more expensive trip. It’s the business class seat to Paris we talked about previously, isn’t it? Instead, I’ll get more than 11 times the value for my miles if I use 60,000 points toward that trip.
High fuel surcharges
To punish you for booking award flights, some partners of American Airlines impose arbitrary taxes and penalties known as fuel surcharges.
British Airways is a great illustration of this. Using American Airlines miles to book a British Airways flight reduces the value of your miles significantly. American Airlines typically charges 57,500 miles and $23.10 in taxes for a business class travel from New York to Amsterdam. British Airways charges $746.70 in taxes on flights managed by them!
However, this BA ticket is worth $6,000, so your miles are still worth 9.1 cents each after taxes. However, if you use American Airlines flights, you’ll save more than $700 each ticket!
If British Airways were my only alternative, I would postpone my vacation to dates where American Airlines had seats available.
How do I earn American Express miles?
Membership Rewards points can be earned by taking advantage of introductory perks. However, thanks to the several American Express credit cards that give welcome bonuses (including the Platinum series), this is no longer an issue:

Free bags, priority check-in and boarding, premium seats, security priority, and access to upgrades are just some of the perks you’ll enjoy based on your membership level.

EQSs (depending on the number of one-way flights you take and the fare class you select) and EQMs will also be accrued (which are determined by the number of miles you earn and the fare class purchased). It is possible to earn 1 EQS for every ticket purchased on American Airlines or one of its partner airlines. If you purchase a full fare first or business-class ticket, three EQMs will be given to you, two EQMs for a discount first or business-class ticket and 1.5 EQMs for a full fare premium economy-class ticket (though these credits can fluctuate among affiliated airline partners).
Mastercard and Citi credit cards associated with AAdvantage are eligible for miles. As a result of these collaborations, you can also earn miles on other travel expenses, such as renting a car from Budget or Avis, using identity theft protection services like LifeLock, or booking a vacation from companies like Royal Caribbean International or Carnival Cruise Lines. In order to earn both AAdvantage award miles and World of Hyatt points during American Airlines flights and stays at participating Hyatt properties, you must have elite status and link your AAdvantage account to a World of Hyatt account.

On most days if saver award space is available after mid-November, United’s reward chart was abolished. From the mainland U.S. to Hawaii, United MileagePlus award tickets typically cost:
There are some low-cost award flights available from the United States to Hawaii, though, thanks to United’s dynamic pricing structure. When flying from San Francisco to Honolulu, for example, United miles are only 9,500.
