As part of the sunsetting of US Airways Dividend Miles, American Airlines and US Airways consolidated millions of frequent flyer accounts over the weekend. Many users experienced troubles with their American Airline Advantage accounts over the weekend, such as difficulty logging in, seeing miles, accessing reservations, and so on. However, American had anticipated the problems and had informed customers that several features of their Advantage accounts would be unavailable for a period of time over the weekend.
I didn’t want to think about the end of US Airways Dividend points, so I didn’t try to check in over the weekend; nonetheless, I received the following email from American Airlines on Sunday night because I had linked my accounts when AA asked.
I checked my Advantage account after reading the notification, and the 18K miles were deposited without trouble.
This was a painless process for me, and it appears to have gone off without a hitch. Although there have been some small concerns reported on flyertalk, it appears that this move was a slam dunk for the AA crew.
Value below 1.3 cents
Receiving a value of 1.4 cents or more is not difficult. If you’re getting less than 1.3 cents per mile, though, you should carefully consider utilizing cash rather than miles. Saving your miles for a future trip when they will save you more money is a wise idea. For example, here’s a 10,000 American Airlines mile round-trip flight from Indianapolis to Austin. Nice! You could arrange 60,000-mile round-trips for your family of three for $33.60 in taxes.
Cash charges, on the other hand, are only $109 each way, which is ridiculously low. This works out to $654 for three round-trips. After subtracting the $33.60 in taxes for award flights, your 60,000 miles are worth $620 in cash.
Low-cost carriers such as Frontier fly this route for $50 one way. Allow the lowest pricing of other airlines to influence your decision on whether or not to use miles.
You’ll only get a value of 1.03 cents per mile if you book award flights for this trip. If I were you, I’d pay cash for these trips and save my miles for a future trip that will be more expensive. Remember that lie-flat business class seat we mentioned before for a trip to Paris? Instead, I’ll get more than 11x the value for my miles if I use 60,000 points toward that trip!
High fuel surcharges
Some of American Airlines’ partners impose absurd fuel surcharges, which are arbitrary taxes and penalties that essentially punish you for purchasing award flights.
British Airways is an excellent illustration of this. When you book a British Airways flight with American Airlines miles, you’ll lose a lot of the value of your miles. American Airlines, for example, charges 57,500 miles and $23.10 in taxes for a business class travel between New York and Amsterdam. If your flight is operated by British Airways, however, your taxes would skyrocket to $746.70!
Given that this British Airways ticket costs $6,000, your miles will still be worth 9.1 cents apiece after you pay the obscene taxes. However, simply choosing American Airlines flights will save you over $700 per ticket!
If British Airways was the only alternative, I would postpone my travel until dates when American Airlines had open seats.
