What Is Simplify Debts In Splitwise?

During one of my recent chats with a friend, he asked me an intriguing question:

What algorithm do you think Splitwise’s’simplify debts’ feature is based on?

For those who are unfamiliar with Splitwise, it is a mobile application that allows a group of individuals (such as friends, relatives, or coworkers) to monitor and split spending.

Splitwise’s Simplify Debts (also known as “debt simplification”) tool restructures debt within groups of people. It does not reduce the total amount owed, but it does make it easier to repay individuals by reducing the number of installments required.

Let’s say Anna, Bob, and Charlie all live in the same flat. Bob owes Anna $20, and Charlie owes Bob $20. Splitwise would inform Anna to send $20 to Charlie directly rather than making two separate payments, reducing the overall number of payments. People will be paid back more swiftly and efficiently as a result of this.

Users can sometimes pay directly from their bank accounts via third-party payment systems. Signing up for this type of service is a smart idea because not every customer has a credit card or is willing to enter credit card information into an internet form. Customers will be more likely to make a purchase if businesses allow them to use a third-party service to safely and securely transfer money directly from their bank account or debit card. As an extra plus, most third-party services make it simple and convenient to pay – clients simply need to enter into their accounts and click a button. As an added bonus, because credit card expiration dates are no longer an issue, this can significantly reduce involuntary churn.

What is Splitwise pro?

  • Splitwise is a free tool that allows users to calculate and repay informal obligations such as bills, shared meals, and travel fast and conveniently.
  • The company generates revenue primarily through the prospective use of adverts and its premium subscription service, Splitwise Pro, which provides additional features.
  • Splitwise is one of many fintech apps that aim to make money management easier. Splitwise does not offer direct money transfers through its app, and users may be charged third-party transfer fees.
  • Splitwise got $20 million in funding from private equity company Insight Partners in April 2021.

How do you simplify in Splitwise?

We implemented a web option to automatically simplify debts inside groups last week. What exactly does that imply? That is, if Anna owes Bob and Bob owes Cathy, Anna can just pay Cathy directly. Fewer payments mean less waiting for your money, which means more fun.

Simply go to your group’s page and click the gray “Settle up” button to see how it works for yourself.

Simplifying Debt with one person

You may have many outstanding accounts with a person — $17 for house expenditures, $84 for that road trip, and another $12 for last night’s meal. It’s difficult to keep track of everything when you’re in many groups with one person.

Do not be concerned! Simply change to the “Friends” view online and bring up the person you’re interested in — at the top of the page, you’ll find a summary of all their debts with you. And, if you want to consolidate all of your obligations into one convenient location, simply click the gray gear icon at the top of the screen (next to your friend’s name) and select Consolidate Debts “Simplify debts with this person” – all outstanding debts will be transferred to your one-on-one account.

Simplifying Debt with a whole bunch of people

So, you and your buddies are all Splitwise users — wonderful! You’re not all in the same group, but it would be fantastic if you could eliminate redundant payments for this one time.

This is referred to as “debt shuffle” by ex-BillMonk users, and it’s a new feature we’ve added today. Choose “Simplify my debts” from the account settings page. You’ll be redirected to a page where you can consolidate your debt with all of your Splitwise friends at once!

Please note that this is a more advanced feature. It makes modifications not only to your account, but also to the accounts of your friends – including balances that you can’t view – in order to minimize payments as much as possible. Your pals may be perplexed as to why their balances have changed if they’ve never utilized Simplified Debt before. Make sure you tell them what happened, or otherwise the shuffle will be deleted and you’ll be back where you started!

Furthermore, in order to avoid ambiguity, this type of debt simplification follows three crucial rules:

This ensures that Simplified Debts always makes things easier for you, not more difficult.

Simplified Debts aren’t for everyone, but if you’re a power user looking to gain control over your debts, give these new features a try and let us know what you think!
