What effect does depreciation have on GDP?

Real GDP increased by 2.6 percent in the third quarter of 2009, but command-basis GDP only increased by 2.0 percent. In other words, the US economy’s purchasing power did not rise as quickly as its actual output in that quarter due to a fall in the terms of trade. In the third quarter of 2009, the price index for gross domestic purchases jumped 1.4 percent, while the GDP price index gained 0.7 percent. The disparity between these indices indicated that, on average, U.S. residents’ prices were rising faster than the prices they received for their production.
